Strength Training on the Bike: Byron's Mountain Biking Season

Why strength training for mountain biking is about more than just getting stronger.

There's nothing we love more at ATS than seeing the hard work our clients put in at the gym pay off in the real world.

And Byron has given us plenty to celebrate this season!

A couple of weeks ago, Byron rounded off his mountain biking season by competing in the Coquet Classic Enduro race, absolutely smashing the goals he'd set himself. Not even a crash could stop him from getting back up, dusting himself off, and finishing the race proud of his performance.

A Season Worth Celebrating

From racing and a trip to the Alps to countless personal bests on our local trails in the Scottish Borders, it's been a fantastic year on the bike for Byron.

Alongside all that riding, Byron has incorporated regular strength training into his routine at ATS.

The goal?

Not simply to lift heavier weights in the gym, but to improve his performance where it actually matters to him, out on the trails.

Why Strength Training Matters for Mountain Bikers

Mountain biking is physically demanding. Long descents, repeated impacts, technical terrain and the occasional unexpected meeting with the ground all place significant demands on your body.

A well-structured strength training programme can help you develop:

  • Greater lower-body strength: Helping you manage the demands of technical riding and challenging terrain.

  • Muscular endurance: Building your capacity to maintain performance through longer descents.

  • Core and upper-body strength: Improving your ability to control the bike and maintain strong riding positions.

  • Physical resilience: Reducing the risks of injury over tricky terrain and when the inevitable crash happens.

For Byron, the improvements have translated into better performance on the bike and the confidence to tackle new challenges.

And while no amount of strength training makes you completely crash-proof, building a stronger, more capable body is certainly a worthwhile investment, and statistically results in lower chances of injury.

Train for What You Love Doing

At ATS, we believe your time in the gym should make the things and sports you enjoy doing even better.

Whether that's mountain biking, road cycling, running or simply keeping up with everyday life, strength training should support your goals rather than take over your schedule.

A massive congratulations to Byron on a fantastic season. We're looking forward to seeing what next year brings!
